Bridging Silos, Building One Community for Health Equity

Together we are reimagining the dynamics of health and social systems. As a volunteer nonprofit organization, Health Equity Initiative (HEI) is dedicated to build a global community that engages across sectors and disciplines to advance health equity. By bringing together and enlisting the efforts of the public and private sectors, professions and communities that have both a stake and an influence on social determinants of health, HEI advocates for improving conditions and achieving equity in health for all. We focus on championing transformative change, supporting knowledge, engaging communities and leaders, and building capacity across sectors and disciplines to address barriers that prevent people from leading healthy and productive lives.

Health Equity Initiative, which was founded in 2011 by a group of health equity pioneers from diverse backgrounds, has suspended active programs for an undefined time as of Sept. 23, 2024, after 13+ years. Our membership program will also be suspended at this time. However, our Health Equity Blog, website, social media, and biannual newsletter will continue to serve as a resource and to inform our community and broader public about health equity issues.

A lot has changed in the health equity movement since Health Equity Initiative was founded, and we are proud to have contributed to progress in many critical areas. Over the past 13+ years, Health Equity Initiative has built a network of 16,000+ newsletter subscribers, social media followers, and website visitors, including many members and associates, and has made significant impacts in advancing health, racial, and social equity. In 2023 Health Equity Initiative's website was also included by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) "in the Library's historical collections of web content as part of its mission to collect, preserve, and make available to the public materials that provide information in medicine and public health, and document their histories.”

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who share our vision and have been involved/are involved with HEI on many fronts.  In 2024-2025, our work will continue through a number of grantee partners to which HEI provided funds.

We invite you all to subscribe to our newsletter, keep up with us on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn, and continue visiting our website and blog.

Racism is a Health Equity Issue!

Picture
Racism is rampant as a pervasive form of bias in the United States and many other countries. Institutionalized racism, such as in the form of police brutality, is a significant issue being faced by the nation’s Black communities. However, police brutality is not the only systemic barrier to health and well-being that Black and Brown communities face in the United States. "Racism influences many social determinants of health, such as access to employment and adequate housing, stress levels, and educational attainment, among others."  Read more, see Health Equity Initiative's past content and resources on this topic, and take the pledge to recognize and address racism and other forms of bias in your organization and community! #RacismIsAHealthEquityIssue
