These flexible virtual internship opportunities allow graduate students and advanced undergraduate students who have completed relevant coursework to acquire important skills within the nonprofit sector. Interning with HEI is a great opportunity to use and expand your skills by working with a team that is passionate about advancing health equity. As health equity is "trending" as a key topic in a variety of sectors, this is an exciting time to join our team and acquire essential leadership, communication, new media, and/or research skills.
Interns will gain valuable experience working within a strategy-oriented non-profit. Internships can count towards school credit and internship/fieldwork requirements. Our internship program is highly competitive. Unless otherwise specified, each intern is required to stay only for one semester (Sept. 10-December 18 for the Fall semester; or January 10-May 15 for the Winter/Spring semester; or May 15 to August 20 for the Summer semester) but many decide to stay longer. We require a minimum commitment of 10 hours/week, but also work with academic programs to meet their specifications regarding required hours.

Sample Past Opportunities
Communication and Social Media Internship/Practicum We are seeking an excellent communicator, good writer, and avid social media user as a communication intern to support different communication activities, draft communication materials, manage various social media accounts to share HEI news and health equity-related resources, and be responsible for developing the organization's quarterly newsletter. The intern will research and document the latest news, publications, and resources related to health equity; develop social media posting plans and update our social media every week, draft reports, media materials, infographics, and other resources or event-related materials. A significant percentage of the intern's time will be dedicated to the organization's newsletter and social media posting. Excellent researching, communication, writing, technology, and organizational skills are required. The intern should be driven, creative, self-motivated, and be able to keep up with the latest social media and technology trends. Strong commitment to health equity, ability to work independently in a virtual environment with in-person or online meetings with the HEI team, and problem-solving skills are required. In addition, the intern must be familiar with health equity-related issues. Graduate students (public health, communication, marketing, international affairs) preferred. Advanced undergraduate students with relevant experience will also be considered. The internship's starting date is Sept. 10, 2021 for the Fall semester and January 10,, 2022 for the Spring Semester. We require a minimum commitment of 10 hours/week. This internship is unpaid but the intern will receive a $500 one-time stipend at the end of the internship/per each semester. Preference will be given to candidates who can fill the position on both semesters. Research and Evaluation Internship/Practicum Health Equity Initiative is looking for a graduate student in public health or related background to serve as a research and evaluation intern to provide support for data processing, analysis, and reporting on the evaluation of Health Equity Initiative's training efforts and other activities. Specific tasks and responsibilities include performing data entry and data management tasks, assisting with summaries of evaluation data, assisting with the development of reports and presentations, conduct literature reviews on assigned topics, assist with planning and coordinating meetings, teleconferences as related to evaluation projects, and supporting the team on various tasks as assigned. Key requirements and technical expertise include some previous experience with research and/or evaluation, excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience with data collection and management, proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, experience with SurveyMonkey and data processing databases, attention to detail, ability to balance multiple tasks and responsibilities and to work 10-12 hours per week. Strong commitment to health equity, ability to work independently in a virtual environment with frequent in-person or online meetings with the HEI team, and problem-solving skills are required. This internship requires a minimum commitment of 6 months from the starting date of June 1st (and in any case by June 15). The internship is unpaid but the intern will receive a $1,000 one-time stipend at the end of the internship. Membership Support, Development and Event Planning Internship/Practicum We are seeking an intern to assist with membership recruitment strategies and activities, event design and planning, sponsorship-related application research, as well as with the coordination of special activities and fundraising events, and for general support. Specific tasks/skills may include: development and implementation of membership recruitment activities and materials, grantmaker/sponsor-related research, development of online and offline membership recruitment and fundraising tools, membership support, list-serv maintenance and posting, and general events support and coordination. Previous experience or coursework on membership associations, researching grant/sponsor prospects and/or event coordination is preferred. The intern should be internet-savvy and able to effectively use the Foundation Center’s resources and other internet search tools. The intern should be driven, creative, have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent interpersonal, stakeholder engagement, research, writing, and organizational skills are required. Graduate students only. Conference Planning Intern Health Equity Initiative, Inc. (HEI) is seeking a Conference Planning Intern to join the team as we work towards planning our bi-annual conference Engaging New Allies in the Health Equity Movement: A Partnership Summit scheduled for 2018. The internship will be for 6 months. HEI is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to building and sustaining a global community that engages across sectors and disciplines to advance heath equity. The Conference Planning Intern is expected to work 6-8 hours a week in multiple roles including independently on assigned projects and with team members engaged in an array of tasks. While the internship is mostly virtual, the intern will be required to attend summit planning meetings at HEI approximately every two weeks and be available all day on the dates of the summit.
