Alka Mansukhani, Founding Treasurer & Co-Vice President
Alka Mansukhani, MS, PhD is an educator and research scientist who believes in citizen and community engagement to address community needs and social justice issues. Alka is a board member and treasurer at Health Equity Initiative since its founding in 2011 and subsequent evolution to a member-driven organization.
Alka was on the faculty at New York University School of Medicine for three decades till 2019 where she taught, conducted research on cancer and stem cells, and published extensively in leading biomedical journals. Alongside her academic work Alka works in biomedical communications to disseminate scientific data and ideas for wider audiences. She has consulted for cancer research foundations and developed metrics to evaluate research funding outcomes. She currently spends part of her time evaluating small foundations and not for profits dealing with poverty and education in India.
Alka received her undergraduate education in Mumbai, went on to obtain a masters in molecular biology from Northern Illinios University in Dekalb, IL, and then received a PhD in genetics from Cornell University in Ithaca NY. Alka was president of the New York chapter of AWIS, a resource and networking organization for women in science where she led career development, mentoring and networking workshops for young scientists. She also served on the NYAS committee that organized the science and technology platform for action for the UN conference on women. Her current activities focus on sustainable, equitable urban development which includes creating parks/waterfronts for climate resiliency in her neighborhood in Long Island City and around NYC.
